Gov. Martinez against proposed Sill Apache casino

Deming, New Mexico (AP) April 2012

New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez says she’s opposed to a casino proposed by the Sill Apache tribe.

Martinez said the tribe agreed they would not attempt to build a casino in Akela when the land was put into trust. She made the comments Tuesday after a speech to a Deming economic development group.

She told the Deming Headlight ( that federal officials also are concerned there’s no gaming compact.

The tribe plans to apply to the federal government for approval of the casino. If approved the application would go to Martinez to determine if it is in the best interests of the community, region and state.

The tribe says the casino would create at least 245 direct and 56 indirect jobs. Tribal officials weren’t immediately available for comment.
