Tribes appeal Stevens Pass bike proposal

The Tulalip Tribes are appealing a federal decision to allow construction of a mountain bike park and water treatment system at Stevens Pass Ski area.

The U.S. Forest Service in April approved the first phase of a major development plan by owners of the Stevens Pass Ski Resort.

The Tulalip Tribes appealed June 7, saying the agency needs to do a complete environmental review of the entire project not just the first phase.

Tribal official Terry Williams says the tribes have an interest in how the lands in the area are used based on treaty rights. They’re concerned about the environmental impact of the entire project.

Forest Service project leader Sean Wetterberg says the agency did a thorough review that considered the project’s cumulative effects and included an extensive wildlife analysis.
