Cranbrook to return native remains for burial

Detroit, Michigan (AP) July 2010

The Cranbrook Institute of Science in suburban Detroit plans to return the remains of 59 American Indians to Michigan tribes for burial.

Institute Director Michael Stafford said during July the remains will be handed over in early August to the Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians, representing a coalition of 13 tribes.

The Detroit Free Press reported the agreement is part of a national trend by museums, universities and institutions to return human remains to native peoples.

American Indians have long complained about the remains being exhibited or treated as scientific specimens.

Cranbrook is located in Bloomfield Hills and has received historical remains since the 1930s. Most were unearthed during road and building construction.
