Fort Jackson hosts archaeology site visit

Fort Jackson, South Carolina (AP) May 2010

Members of the public can chat with archaeologists and see some prehistoric ceramic items found at a site located at Fort Jackson.

Army officials say the public is welcome Saturday to see a site excavated after its discovery in 1991. Researchers from the University of South Carolina’s Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology found a large number of quartz tools and prehistoric ceramic pottery fragments.

Army officials say testing has shown humans occupied the site over the past 9,000 years.

Work there has been done in cooperation with national preservationist groups and members of 14 native Tribes that Fort Jackson officials consult on a regular basis.
