University of Michigan: We’ll ‘reach out’ to tribes on remains return

Ann Arbor, Michigan (AP) March 2010

The University of Michigan says it will contact tribes soon about returning the remains of about 1,390 people in its collections.

Research Vice President Stephen Forrest says the announcement was prompted by a March 15 U.S. Interior Department rule on handling remains that aren’t linked to a particular contemporary tribe.

Tribes have faulted the Ann Arbor school’s compliance with the 1990 federal Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act. In October, Michigan formed a committee to review its policies on handling Indian bones and artifacts in its archaeological collection.

Forrest says the university will “reach out to tribal leaders” and will have a process in place when the rule takes effect May 14.
