Remains find halts Alabama project

Anniston, Alabama (AP) March 2010

Construction of a sports complex in Oxford has been halted by the discovery of ancient American Indian remains at the site, and a meeting is scheduled to determine how to get the project started again.

Oxford City Council President Chris Spurlin says the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers stopped the project in February because it had not been notified about the remains, which were discovered in early January.

It was stipulated in the city’s wetlands permit that the corps must be notified if remains or artifacts were discovered.

The council will meet with all parties involved on April 5.

Spurlin says the city has had to pay about $12,000 a day, except for days of rain, during the shutdown to Taylor Corp., which is building the complex.
