Glendale mayor rejects Tohono O'odham role in NHL team

Glendale Mayor Elaine Scruggs has rejected the idea of joining forces with the Tohono O’odham Nation to keep the NHL Phoenix Coyotes at the city-owned arena.

Representatives from the Goldwater Institute made the suggestion last week during a meeting with Glendale officials.

Goldwater’s litigation director says a partnership with the tribe was “worth exploring” because it would not involve taxpayers and it would keep the team here.

Scruggs rejected Goldwater’s idea because the city is suing the tribe over a proposed casino in Glendale

A Tohono O’odham spokesman tells The Arizona Republic the tribe has been approached about getting involved with the Coyotes, but has not made an offer to buy the hockey team.
