Sioux nickname retirement voted top sports story

The retirement of the University of North Dakota’s Fighting Sioux nickname has been voted the state’s top sports story for 2010.

The survey of the broadcast and print members of The Associated Press picked the nickname issue over North Dakota State’s run through the Division I FCS football playoffs.

The long-standing issue of the UND nickname came to a head when a court ruling upheld the Board of Higher Education’s authority to retire the logo at any time.

NDSU’s unlikely finish included its first-ever playoff game in the Fargodome.

The Olympic silver-medal run by Grand Forks sisters Jocelyne and Monique Lamoureux was voted third, followed by Fargo South High School track star Laura Roesler’s route to a state-record 20 individual championships, and UND’s foray into the Big Sky Conference.
