Ackley, Bill: Walking On

Lac du Flambeau, Wisconsin

Funeral services were held for BILL ACKLEY, 79, on May 11 at the Wellness Center in Lac du Flambeau. Interment, with military honors, followed at the Lac du Flambeau Memorial Cemetery. Bill was born in Lac du Flambeau. He passed away May 8, 2012, at his home in Lac du Flambeau.

After high school graduation from the Flandreau Indian School in Pipestone, Minnesota, Bill served as a Marine Sergeant, stationed in southern California. After his honorable discharge, he and his wife returned to Lac du Flambeau to raise their family. In later years, they fostered Indian children. Bill held various positions including laborer, television repairman and repairing computers for IBM. In 1983, Bill returned to school and attended Northland College in Ashland, Wisconsin, graduating in 1987 with a degree in Environmental Studies. Bill participated in Lac du Flambeau community activities with the Indian Bowl and Bingo Hall. He was a member of the Tribal Council and Constitution Committee. Later, Bill was an elder consultant to the Ojibwe Language Board. He was a respected Drum Owner and Ojibwe elder in the Lac du Flambeau and neighboring communities.
