Aleck, Shawashnye: Walking On

Yakima, Washington

Funeral services were held for SHAWASHNYE ALECK, 60, on February 12, at the Toppenish Creek Longhouse. Interment followed at the Toppenish Creek Cemtery. Shawashnye was born September 18, 1951, in The Dalles, Oregon. She passed away at the Yakima Regional Medical and Cardiac Center on February 10, 2012.
   
“Lefty” was raised and educated in White Swan, Washington. She attended and graduated from Riverside Indian High School at Anadarko, Oklahoma, where she was a cheerleader for four years, homecoming royalty and class officer. She worked in Washington D.C. for the U.S. Senate Select Committee on Indian Affairs and in the American Indian Banking industry. She moved to Seattle, Washington, where she worked as a dispatcher for Quest, before moving back to Toppenish in the mid 2000s. She is an enrolled member of the Yakima Nation. She attended the Toppenish Creek Longhouse. (Yakama Nation Review, February 14, 2012)
