Yakima, Washington

Funeral services were held for RENEE VALDA SMARTLOWIT ELWELL, 52, on July 27, at the Wapato Longhouse. Interment followed in the Emunot Cemetery, near Wiley City, Washington. Renee was born July 5, 1959, in Toppenish, Washington. She passed away July 23, 2011, at her home near Yakima.

Renee was an enrolled member of the Yakama Nation. She worked at the Yakama Nation’s Mt. Adams Furniture Factory at Wapato, Washington, until it closed, and as a medical records clerk and phone operator at the Yakama Nation Indian Health Clinic. She was a talented beadworker, cook and caregiver. She always had a smile on her face. She will always be remembered for her footsteps in the Pentecostal faith at the Wilderness Church, and her respect for the longhouse and Indian Shaker religions. She enjoyed being with family and spending time with her grandkids. (Yakama Nation Review, August 12, 2011)
