Oakland, Wilbur: Veteran Walks On

Bemidji, Minnesota March 2011

WILBUR OAKLAND, 78, passed away on January 1, 2011, at Havenwood Care Center in Bemidji. Interment was held at the Ft. Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis. Wilbur was born February 25, 1932, in Onigum, Minnesota.

Wilbur was raised and educated in Bemidji. He attended two years and graduated from Flandreau Indian School. He entered the U.S. Navy in 1951, and served on the USS Tarawa during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged in 1955. He worked for the US Government in the Bureau of Indian Affairs for some time. He moved to Washington, where he worked for Boeing Aircraft. He enjoyed playing bingo, watching scary movies, collecting matchbox cars, and playing the harmonica.
