Tahkeal, Lisa Marie: Walking On

Yakima, Washington March 2011

Funeral services were held for LISA MARIE TAHKEAL, 55, on January 18, 2011, at the Toppenish Creek Longhouse. Interment followed at the 1910 Shaker Church Cemetery. Lisa was born June 6, 1955, in The Dalles, Oregon. She passed away January 15, 2011, at home with family by her side in Wapato, Washington.

Lisa was a member of the Yakama Nation and Toppenish Creek Longhouse. She was raised in Harrah, Washington, and educated in Wapato, Washington. She then attended Eastern Washington University at Cheney, Washington, where she graduated and received her masters degree in Higher Education. Soon after, she worked as a teacher for the Toppenish School District at the middle school and Garfield Elementary for several years before retiring in 2006. Lisa was also known for working as director of the Yakama Nation’s Camp Chaparral. Lisa enjoyed working with children of all ages. Teaching was her gift – to educate for the future. Her hobbies included reading and collecting children’s books, picking huckleberries, root digging, and canning. Her pleasure was gambling at Yakama Legends Casino, Wildhorse Casino, Muckleshoot Casino and other various casinos.
