Ance, Ina Mae

NEW MEXICO, Las Cruces – Funeral services were held for INA MAE ANCE, 102, on October 9, 2010, at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Las Cruces. Interment followed at Masonic Cemetery in Las Cruces. Ina Mae was born May 30, 1908, in Denver, Colorado. She passed away October 2, 2010, in Las Cruces.

After finishing the eighth grade, Ina Mae was enrolled in the Haskell Institute. In 1927, she began her 51-year teaching career at Crownpoint Boarding School. Over the years her students have included a future tribal chairman, tribal education director and many code talkers. She taught several now-famous artists how to write their names in her kindergarten class. However, she was most proud of her students who became educators. In her final year, she was honored by the Eastern Navajo Agency with Ina Mae Ance Day. A stone monument was dedicated to her in front of her beloved Crownpoint Boarding School. Ina Mae was of Laguna/Winnebago descent. She was a member of St. Andrews Episcopal Church and the Haskell Alumni Association. (Navajo Times, November 11, 2010)
