Johns, Nancy Lookingglass

IDAHO, Kamiah – Funeral services were held for NANCY LOOKINGGLASS JOHNS, 82, at the Second Indian Presbyterian Church. Nancy was cremated and her asshes were laid on the Lookingglass property in Kamiah, and at the Lookingglass Monument at the site of the Bear Paw Battlefield of the Nez Perce War of 1877, located near Chinook, Montana. Nancy was born October 25, 1927, at the Lookingglass property in Kamiah. She passed away September 2, 2010, surrounded by family.   

    A member of the Nez Perce Tribe, Nancy was raised in Kamiah until she left to attend boarding school at Haskell Indian Boarding School. After graduation, she attended Cook Christian Training School in Tempe, Arizona. She and her husband had traveled to Newark, New Jersey and the Los Angeles, California areas to do ministry work before returning to Arizona and the Cook Christian Training School. In 1973, Nancy worked for the Phoenix Indian Medical Center until 1983, when she decided to move home to the Nez Perce Reservation. Nancy was an avid reader of spiritual and historical books throughout her life, and built a collection of books relating to the history and culture of the Nez Perce, as well as other Native American communities across the United States.
