Jumper, Betty Mae: Funeral set for first woman to lead Seminole Tribe

Hollywood, Florida (AP) January 2011

Family and friends are remembering the late Betty Mae Tiger Jumper, the first and only woman to chair the Tribal Council of the Seminole Tribe of Florida.

A visitation and service are scheduled for Monday morning, followed by a burial at the New Seminole Cemetery in Hollywood. Jumper was 88 when she died at her home.

Jumper was the first Seminole to graduate from high school. She continued her education in nursing and made improved health care a priority for her tribe.

Jumper was one of two women appointed to the National Congress on Indian Opportunity by President Richard Nixon. She was a founder of the United South and Eastern Tribes, which became a powerful lobbying force for Indian interests.
