News From Indian Country

This is the true fable of Louis Cadotte "Nailing the Rat" on Madeline Island, LaPointe, Wisconsin. Louie was one of the last few Ojibwe Indians still living on Madeline Island, sometimes called the homeland of the Ojibwe Nation. Cadotte had a reputation for telling, tall stories, that ended up being true.

Here is the story of Louis "Nailing the Rat" as told by Tom Nelson (owner of Tom's Burnt Down Cafe) which was supported by author Tom Vennum who also recited the "true" story. This is the famed Island and Burnt Down Cafe that Winona LaDuke and musician Keith Secola often talk about and celebrate at each summer.
