Protesters occupy tribal meals building in SD

Porcupine, South Dakota (AP) March 2011

Oglala Sioux police say about 20 protesters have peacefully occupied the elderly meals building in the South Dakota town of Porcupine since the beginning of March.

Capt. Milt Bianis says officers are making routine security checks while waiting for the tribal administration to negotiate with the members of the Strong Heart Warrior Society.

Members of the civil rights group accuse meals program staff of elder abuse ranging from physical threats to undercooked food. Bianis says he has no evidence that supports the allegations. Tribal officials did not immediately return a telephone call to The Associated Press seeking comment.
