Officials at Crazy Horse Memorial in the Black Hills say they’re closing in on a $5 million fund raising goal to fully match a grant from philanthropist and businessman T. Denny Sanford.

The fund raising campaign that began three years ago has raised just over $4 million to help cover the expenses of a mountain carving honoring Sioux warrior Crazy Horse.

The $5 million grant to the Crazy Horse Memorial Foundation from Sanford is being paid in million-dollar increments. It is the largest in the history of the Crazy Horse Memorial.

Foundation officials are working on a plan to raise the remaining $975,000 of the $5 million goal.
