Three Affiliated Tribes has changed tribal enrollment requirement

The Three Affiliated Tribes has changed its requirement for tribal enrollment.

The Minot Daily News reports that members voted last week to allow only those with at least one-eighth degree Hidatsa, Mandan or Arikara blood to become enrolled members.

The move ends lineal descendency, which requires only that a tribal member be a descendant of an enrolled member.

About 57 percent of voters favored the change. Sixty-three percent approved a separate amendment that requires candidates for tribal business council and tribal chairman to have a minimum one-fourth Indian blood.
