Nickname supporter says no Standing Rock vote yet

A supporter of the University of North Dakota’s Fighting Sioux nickname says the Standing Rock Sioux Tribal Council has voted not to discuss it.

Archie Fool Bear had been trying to get the council to approve a reservation vote on the nickname and logo. He says that after many delays, the vote was 8-4 on Sept. 8th not to discuss it.

Fool Bear says he’ll keep trying to get the council to take another look at the issue.

The State Board of Higher Education voted last spring to set an Oct. 1 deadline for UND and the board to win tribal support for keeping the nickname.

Under a settlement with the NCAA, which considers American Indian nicknames offensive, UND and the state must have the support of the state’s two Sioux tribes. The Spirit Lake tribe earlier voted overwhelmingly to support the nickname.
