Waiting game for families after White Swan fire

Toppenish, Washington (AP) March 2011

Trailers are expected to arrive this week to temporarily house those displaced by a Feb. 12 wildfire that destroyed 18 homes on tribal land at White Swan.

Harry Smiskin of the Yakama Nation Tribal Council says the tribe secured 14 trailers through the Bureau of Indian Affairs. The tribe is also buying five mobile homes to temporarily house victims.

Many families have been staying in hotels since the fire.

The Yakima Herald-Republic says the Washington state Department of Emergency Management recently finished a damage assessment, a step required before the state can seek a disaster declaration.
