Grant to help Pine Ridge museum explore expansion

A small art museum on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation is taking the first step toward expansion.

The Heritage Center at the Red Cloud Indian School has been awarded a $100,000 grant as part of a partnership program between the Ford Foundation and Leveraging Investments in Creativity. The museum was one of dozen recipients selected from a pool of 700 applicants.

Officials say the museum is running out of space for its more than 10,000 pieces of Native American artwork and artifacts.

Heritage Center director Peter Strong tells the Rapid City Journal that the grant should help the museum find a solution to its space problems. He says the money will pay for consultants, surveys and some operating costs.
