A member of the Rosebud Sioux Tribe has been named director of the federal Bureau of Indian Education.

Keith Moore’s appointment was announced by the U.S. Department of the Interior.

Moore is the chief diversity officer at the University of South Dakota. Prior to that, he oversaw Indian education for the state.

Moore says he’s committed to providing education programs to American Indians and Alaska natives that are in keeping with their cultural and economic needs.

The Bureau of Indian Education oversees education laws and offers assistance to schools on 64 reservations.
