A law professor at the University of Arizona has been selected as the new dean at the University of New Mexico’s law school.

Kevin Washburn, a member of the Chickasaw Nation of Oklahoma, is the first American Indian to serve as dean of UNM’s law school. He was chosen after a national search.

Washburn started his legal education at UNM at the American Indian Law Center’s summer program. He earned his law degree from Yale and went on to serve as a federal prosecutor in New Mexico and teach at Harvard, the University of Minnesota and at Arizona’s law school.

Washburn says UNM’s law school has a talented and committed faculty and a diverse student body. He says he will be honored to serve the community.
