Yakama tribe restoring coho habitat

Wenatchee, Washington (AP) 10-08

The Yakama tribe plans to spend more than $32 million over the next decade to expand its coho reintroduction program in the Wenatchee and Methow river basins.

The expansion is funded by the Bonneville Power Administration and Chelan, Douglas and Grant county PUDs.

Wild coho were wiped out of the upper Columbia River system in the early 1900s by logging and irrigation dams and overfishing.

The Wenatchee World reports the reintroduction plan will create small ponds where juvenile salmon raised in hatcheries get used to local waters.
