Big Foot Conference - South Dakota gives grant to athletic official training

Gov. Mike Rounds has approved a $25,000 state grant to help support a project that trains Native American sports referees.

The Big Foot Conference Officials Project is a coordinated effort of the state, the South Dakota High School Activities Association and some schools.

The project is aimed at created a trained group of Native American basketball, football and volleyball officials. It also is designed to develop familiarity among American Indian athletes and non-Indian referees.

Training so far has been given to 26 basketball referees, 12 football referees and 11 volleyball referees.
