Guthrie adaptation of Erdrich novel to debut

The Guthrie Theater is preparing for its first preview performance of a new play based on a novel by Minnesota writer Louise Erdrich.

The Guthrie’s production of “The Master Butchers Singing Club” gets its first preview performance Saturday night. It’s kicking off the 2010-11 season at the Minneapolis theater.

The stage adaptation of Erdrich’s novel is by Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning playwright Marsha Norman. It follows the lives of numerous residents of a small North Dakota town between the first and second World Wars.

Erdrich is the author of 13 novels that have explored Native American life in Minnesota and North Dakota as well as German American cultural traditions and small town life. She lives in Minneapolis.
