Artifacts found at proposed West Virginia school site

An archaeological study of the proposed site for a new high school in Putnam County has unearthed more than 300 Indian artificats.

The discovery was announced during early April at a county school board meeting. Superintendent Chuck Hatfield said the artifacts mainly consisted of stone tools and arrowheads.Hatfield said the proposed 40-acre site of the new Buffalo High School is within an “artifact-rich area.”

The study is being conducted by a Pennsylvania-based archaeological firm. Hatfield said the findings will be given to state archaeologists. They will determine the next step.

County voters will decide in September whether to approve a construction bond for the school.
