A sheriff’s lieutenant says human remains, unearthed by a heavy equipment operator near Woods Bay, are a historical matter and not a criminal matter.

Lt. Mike Sargeant, with the Lake County sheriff’s office, says the remains were discovered recently.

The communications director for the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes, Rob McDonald, says University of Montana anthropologists determined the remains dated to before the Civil War. The anthropologists determined the remains were those of a Native American, most likely a male in his early teens.

McDonald says the remains have been turned over to the tribes. He says Tribal Police Chief Craig Couture commended Lake County authorities for their handling of the situation.
