Human skull reburied at Oceano Dunes in ceremony

Oceano, California (AP) 7-08

A human skull and jawbone discovered during early July in the Oceano Dunes of San Luis Obispo County have been reburied in a private Native American religious ceremony.

State Parks Department officials said July 8 a biologist studying birds in the remote area found the bones July 1. The remains were reburied in the sand the next day.

The uncovered bones, plus an arrowhead, are believed to be the remains of a Native American buried there thousands of years ago.

Oceano Dunes deputy district superintendent Rey Monge says following the discovery local officials contacted the California Native American Heritage Commission, which decided the skull should be reburied.

A person believed to be the remainsÂ’ closest living descendant was contacted and performed the ceremony.
