Remains found in burned building may not be ID’d

Coeur D'Alene, Idaho (AP) February 2011

A spokesman for the Coeur d’Alene Tribe says officials may never be able to identify the person whose remains were found in the rubble of an historic tribal building that burned to the ground in DeSmet earlier this month.

Tribal spokesman Marc Stewart tells the Coeur d’Alene Press that only bones were found buried under rubble that had burned for three days, starting on Feb. 3. He says the sex of the victim hasn’t been determined.

Stewart says the Spokane County Medical Examiner’s Office could recommend the bones be sent to a DNA lab for further testing.

All that is left of the Sister’s Building is brick, ash and steel pipe. The FBI is helping investigate the cause of the fire.
