Mach-E-Be-Nash-She-Wish Pottawatomi trust land declared reservation

Wayland Township, Michigan (AP) 8-09

Plans for a Native American casino in southwestern Michigan have moved ahead another step.

Department of Indian Affairs Assistant Secretary Echo Hawk announced the signing of a proclamation making 147 acres in Allegan County’s Wayland Township a formal reservation.

The U.S. Department of the Interior put the land into trust for the Gun Lake Tribe of Pottawatomi Indians earlier this year. The tribe’s full name is the Match-E-Be-Nash-She-Wish Band of Pottawatomi Indians.

Tribal spokesman James Nye says the administrative action was expected for some time.

The tribe plans to build a $200 million casino complex on the land 20 miles south of Grand Rapids.

Nye says a groundbreaking hasn’t been scheduled.
