Man apprehended after shot reportedly fired on Bass Lake 4-29-07

KESHENA, Wis. (AP) - A Keshena man was taken into custody after a report that a gunshot was fired at children spearfishing on Bass Lake, police said.

“We were called up there because the kids said they were spearfishing and somebody fired a rifle and struck the water about 25 yards or so away from them,” said Tribal Police Master Sgt. Warren Warrington of the Menominee Tribal Police.

The incident happened around 2 a.m. Saturday.

Police said the 59-year-old man was found to be in possession of a single-shot 30-30 rifle and ammunition. He was taken into custody on suspicion of reckless use of a weapon.

Warrington said the criminal complaint would be filed later. A charge of being a felon in possession of a firearm also was referred to the U.S. District Attorney's Office.
