Native Ceremonial Elders from the USA join Native Environmentalists from Canada to protect water

Toronto, Ontario (ICC) 4-09

Ceremonial Elders from Utah and California are joining Mohawks and Chippewa of Ontario to unite in defence of the Sacred Alliston Aquifer and Sacred Surface Springs of Tiny Township , here in Ontario .

Arnold Thomas from Utah, as well as elders Robertjohn Knapp from California, and Jimelda Johnston and Wilmer Nadjiwon of Cape Croker, Ontario are demanding that Premier Dalton McGuinty immediately rescind his government’s approval to create a garbage dump at the Sacred Surface Springs of the Alliston Aquifer, near Georgian Bay. Ironically, Premier McGuinty’s Ministry of the Environment itself has given approval to commercial activity that could see the pristine waters of the Aquifer drained this very spring.

“We as Ojibway and Chippewa people need to establish a relationship by making offerings to the spirit of the water in a big way because of all the abuse the water has seen,” says Cape Croker Elder Jimelda Johnston, noting that people have been living on this land for thousands of years. “Our people are trying to bring awareness to the world. We need to heal the water so that the water can heal us. There is a lot of waste being created now from mismanagement,” Jimelda Johnston says, “Waste kills everything; waste kills life. Our people have been struggling hard to educate Canada about the sacredness of the Great Lakes, Georgian Bay and Mother Earth.”

As Elder Wilmer Nadjiwon says, “There is a lot of misery on Mother Earth, just think of the misery being caused to our Mother Earth’s body.

Leader of Ontario 's NDP, Andrea Horwath, supports these efforts, “I join in opposing the environmentally degrading proposal known as Dump Site 41. I heartily support the advocacy work that is being done for the environment by Danny Beaton and all like-minded activists.”
